History

The suburb was established in the 1830s and 40s, and is seen as one of the most important places in the city to still see the post gold-rush infrastructure expansion that the country experienced during the time. Before 1994, the suburb we know today was part of the City of Hawthorn, but was joined with the cities of Camberwell and Kew to become the City of Boroondara.

Modern Hawthorn

Today, Hawthorn is seen as one of Melbourne’s most important and prosperous suburbs, and has some of the highest land values in the entire country. The success of the suburb also means that its residents enjoy world-class access to the following:

  • Design
Hawthorn has a wide variety of designs motifs running through the suburb. From stately Victorian mansions, to elegant single fronted cottages (also hailing from the Victorian era) and more modern flats and apartments, Hawthorn’s choices of living spaces is unmatched.
  • Education
The suburb is well-known for its ample student accommodation, which is largely due to the location of Swinburne University, and the Hawthorn Campus of the University of Melbourne. There is also a wide variety of excellent public and private primary and secondary schools, which makes the suburb an excellent choice for families as well.
  • Infrastructure
Due to its proximity to Melbourne’s CBD, Hawthorn has a wealth of sporting grounds and facilities, pristine parks, welfare centres, youth clubs and various other public recreational spaces that make living in the suburb so welcoming. The suburb also has access to three railway stations and various tram routes, which ensure that getting around is as easy as Hawthorn is beautiful.
