Smart space-saving decisions made during the design and renovation of your home will make even the smallest rooms seem luxuriously spacious. All it takes is a little bit of planning, attention to detail and, of course, working with expert design-build teams like those at Duncan Thompson Extensions.

Here’s how you can max out space in every room:

  1. Use the light

A small room can be dark, which can make it feel even smaller, so go bold with your lighting. Big windows will also make your rooms feel bigger. Have you considered a raised skylight? It is an excellent way to break the monotony of a ceiling and let in the sunshine.

  1. Create multi-use rooms

Install sliding panels in the larger rooms. When they’re open, you have a large, clear space and if you need some privacy for work or study, you can slide the panels shut, creating two separate rooms. Sliding doors are also an excellent solution when kids need to share a bedroom.

  1. Design with dividers

If you have a small lounge-dining area, create two individual spaces by installing a non-solid divider of some kind. A freestanding fireplace is an excellent option as are open shelves for ornaments, a TV on a swivel mount or even a giant fish tank.

  1. Go open plan

An open-plan design is the best way to give the illusion of space and create a flow through a home. Putting up walls in your living areas will leave you feeling cramped and claustrophobic.

  1. Max out your kitchen island

Don’t clutter your kitchen with more shelves and cupboards than necessary. Instead of having a solid kitchen island, install spring-loaded cabinets and drawers (which don’t need handles) on the sides. A concealed power strip is also a smart space-saver.

  1. Expandable furniture

Don’t have room for an 8-seater dining table? Get one for four that can be expanded to accommodate eight. No space for a kitchen table? Have a pull-out counter built into your kitchen island. You can do the same in your bathrooms and study areas where extra working space is needed from time to time.
