With four growing children, Gary and Sue came to Duncan Thompson needing more space – lots of space. They had been disappointed with the poor zoning of a design proposed by the first company they went to and had already lost time. They were keen to find a company that could not only design the right solution for their family, but that could take care of the permits and get on with building it as soon as possible.

Duncan Thompson’s designer began by creating a generous new upper storey, with a rumpus room and bathroom at the top of the stairs, and three large bedrooms, each with a bay window to accommodate a study desk.

The existing ground floor area was enlarged by extending the house both to the side and to the rear. This gave enough room for a large new master bedroom with walk-in robe and ensuite, formal lounge and dining rooms, a fifth bedroom, bathroom, study, and laundry. At the rear, a generous family-oriented kitchen looked over a new informal meals and living space, with plenty of glass to help connect the space to the back yard and new swimming pool.

The result was a large and impressive home with street appeal, huge improvement to capital value, a feature article in Australian House and Garden magazine – and a very happy family!
